Why don't mobile phone manufacturers make all phones quad-band instead of tri-band?

It would have been great if all mobile phones are available in quad-band. What's the reason for making tri-band instead of quad band? Is it due to cost or takes extra space? I understand tri-band market is large but my point is that if they make quad band, they can be used all over the world.

i have actually asked this same questions to dealer representatives of nokia, RIM (blackberry), and motorola; all of them answered that the issue is price. in america, we primarily use the 850 and 1900 MHz frequencies of the GSM bands. therefor, even a dual band (850 and 1900) phone will work at most US locations.

YOU WILL NEVER NEED A QUAD BAND PHONE IN AMERICA. NO CARRIER HAS EVER USED THE 900MHz FREQUENCY HERE.

our american sense of triband and the european sense of triband are actually different. in america, we use the 850, 1800, and 1900 gsm frequencies. in europe (in actuality anywhere except america), they use the 900, 1800, and 1900 frequencies, so their sense of "triband" is different than ours.

some manufacturers only make quad (850, 900, 1800, 1900) band phones for a particular carrier (as motorola does with their supply of t-mobile phones).

to answer your question, yes, quad band phones WILL work all over the world. however, studies show that the vast majority of the US cellphone market will never set foot in any country that uses the 900MHz (the fourth band in "quad band") frequency. so leaving out the single, mostly unused, frequency lowers the price of the phones and manufacturers are able to introduce more functions (such as mp3, internet, and voice recognition) into their products at less cost.

furthermore, most manufacturers have quad band phones at very competitive prices available for all carriers.

It depends on your mobile network. If your mobile network support for worldwide call, then I'm sure you can make a call to US. Quadband phone means it can receive 4 bands of network. Example, if you want to go to US, your phone must support GSM 850 / 1900, otherwise your phone won't work there.
