laptop screen is nothing but vertical colored lines. laptop works fine on an external monitor?

For a day this was happening on and off and a few times it was resolved with a tap on the computer.. This makes me hope its a loose connection or something not as major as a screen replacement.

if you turn the computer off for a few hours and restart it, you get a few seconds of display until you press a button and it quickly turns to a rainbow.

It might be a loose connection to the LCD, especially if those few seconds of display are monochromatic.

If the unit is out of warranty, and if you think you are up to it, give it a go. Start with the panel behind the display if you can find the screws. They might be hidden underneath a plastic overlay around the bezel, or they might be on the back. It might be a press-fit, there may be small slots that you can push a thin-bladed screwdriver into to release the tabs. (DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING!!!) If you can't find the screws/tabs on the display, open the bottom and look near where the hinge is. Try not to remove any boards, they are a real pain to try and pack back in. Some manufacturers use unusual screws like Torx or Cooper, don't try to fake it with standard drivers, you will strip the screw. Besides, it's an excuse to buy new tools.

If you get it open, look for flat ribbon cables going to the display or small "rider" boards on the display. Gently push the connections back together. If that doesn't work, disconnect then reconnect all connections, (one at a time!) this may clean contamination off the contacts. If that doesn't work, get an estimate for service. But I'll bet it's more than half the cost of a new laptop.
